Prof Sean Fennessy

Honorary Associate Professor

Prof Sean Fennessy has undertaken marine research since 1989, while based at the Oceanographic Research Institute, a unique, non-profit, non-governmental, research organization widely recognized for its contribution to applied marine science in South Africa and the wider western Indian Ocean region. His interests are broad, and he consider himself to be a combination of a fisheries scientist and marine biologist/ ecologist. He has studied organisms and fisheries of estuarine, reef and soft-sediment habitats, as reflected in his publications.

  • Identification, execution and/or supervision of diverse marine research projects locally and regionally in the Western Indian Ocean
  • Preparing and/or reviewing of project proposals, reports, manuscripts, legislation and other documents for local and international funders, institutions and agencies
  • Co-ordination and presentation of the fisheries science module at the University of KwaZulu-Natal; supervision of postgraduate students
  • Selected consultancies in the Western Indian Ocean to support decision-makers
