UKZN hosted 45 learners from three high schools—Haythorne Secondary School, Alexandra High School, and Eastwood Secondary School—on the Agriculture campus in Pietermaritzburg on 12 August. The event aimed to inspire the next generation of scientists by offering information on career possibilities.
The introductory session was followed by visits to various departments within the School of Life Sciences. The learners explored the Microscopy and Microanalysis Unit, the Museum, and the animal house, where they gained insight into different scientific disciplines. After tea, they participated in hands-on Biochemistry and Microbiology experiments that not only demonstrated the practical applications of their classroom knowledge, but also sparked their curiosity about future scientific careers.
A highlight of the day was a quiz based on the activities they had engaged in, with prizes awarded to the top three learners and additional spot prizes. The event concluded with learners’ reflections.
Ms Lwandile Mkhize from Alexandra High School who won first prize remarked, ‘The day was very informative, and I enjoyed using the microscopes and seeing microorganisms under a microscope. I discovered that there is a wide range of careers in the science field, and I am looking forward to seeing where I will end up.’
Ms Tyra Joubert, a Grade 10 learner at Haythorne Secondary agreed: ‘I learnt a lot of interesting things from the animal house to the microscopy department, and doing experiments in a lab setting was fun.’
Mr Blessing Hlatshwayo, who is in Grade 10 at Alexandra High School, said: “I had fun at the UKZN Career Expo, and I learned a lot about life sciences even though I am not a life science learner. Thank you, UKZN.’
